Social and enviromental responsibility in Indonesia

 

The fine leather used in Valdeā€™s belts and other accessories derives from a beautiful warm-water cichlid fish: the tilapia. Known as a delicacy in western cultures, and significant as a source of nutrition in developing countries, tilapia evolved in the River Nile before being introduced to warm waters around the globe after World War II.

 

They grow quickly on a diet of algae and other aquatic plants in a wide range of habitats including streams, ponds and lakes. All these characteristics have helped to establish tilapia as an important farmed-fish species, producing nutritious fillets and a variety of by-products including skin that tans and works easily as an attractive alternative to other kinds of leather.
