Sustainable tilapia leather Tanned and dyed in North Sumatra
Regal Springs’ no-waste philosophy has contributed significantly to tilapia’s increasing recognition not just as a nutritious farmed fish, but also as a high-grade alternative to reptile skin — and even an ethical fashion statement. While snakeskin has recently come under scrutiny for inhumane treatment of reptiles, Valde’s tilapia leather production is rigorously humane.
The fish are transported from the farms in oxygenated tanks, and laid on ice slabs to numb them before their throats are painlessly cut. Such welfare standards result in the very highest quality tilapia skin, in a range of natural tones, which can be accentuated by tanning and dyeing to produce leather as striking as the fish themselves.
